Birth Story
So this is what happened...
On Thursday and Friday (January 17 &18), I started to notice the baby wasn't moving as much as he normally does. I also just had a OB appt that showed no growth over the past 2 weeks. I probably would have thought little of it (being that this is my first pregnancy and all...how am I supposed to know how much a baby should be moving) had I not read an message board on ivillage.com that caught my eye. It talked about lack of movement and the causes of it and how serious it is. Well needless to say I freaked! I called the drs office Friday afternoon and told them I was concerned about the babies growth...they told me to call Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) to schedule an ultrasound (u/s). The soonest they could get me in was Jan.28...over a week away!! Augh!! I did not sleep at all Friday night.
Saturday morning I called to dr and told them MFM could not see me until Jan.28. I als forgot to mention the baby was moveing less...again I was unaware this is a HUGE deal. The dr said go to hospital to get checked out. So I woke Scott up and we went to the hospital. After doing a nonstress test (NST) and u/s, the dr came in and told us the baby is doing fine b/c he passed the NST, but he is showing up very small. He was measuring 28 weeks and I was 33 weeks...below the 10th percentile! This is called Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR), I just read about it last night. The dr also mentioned the Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) was on the low-normal range of 5.2...below 5 is low and dangerous. The dr recommended I get a steriod shot (helps baby's lung develop faster) today and come back to hospital tomorrow to get another steroid shot and NST. The dr also said to go to MFM Monday morning so they can do another u/s to check AFI.
Sunday we went back to hospital and got the shot and the baby passed to NST again. The dr told us we will be monitored very closely from here forward. We were feeling a little bit better.
On Monday morning I called MFM to see what time they could fit us in...10am. Scott and I met at the dr's office to have another u/s. As we watched to u/s tech do her measurements I got more and more nervous. I could see the screen as she typed in data...the baby was still showing up 28weeks, weighing only 2lb 9oz. My AFI was 2.1!! I asked what this means, the tech the dr will be in the see us and he might redo some of the measurements to double check. The dr came in and looked around for a minute or two and said the AFI was dangerously low and we were having a baby TODAY! He told us to go straight to the hospital and the dr from our practice will be waiting...and by the way, the baby is breech so you will be having a c-section! Needless to say I was a mess. I could tell Scott was nervous, but he stayed extremely calm and collected.
When we arrived at the hospital, the team was getting ready. The neonatolgist, obstetrician, and anesthesiologiest all came in to talk to us about the procedure. Within a couple hours of arriving at the hospital...Baron Evan was here!

Just looked again at Baron's webpage and it's so much fun watching him grow from the site. However, I'm really looking forward to seeing him next week. Baron is very lucky to have you guys as his mommy and daddy and you are so lucky to have Baron as your son.
Love,
Dad
